Fine Line Tattoo Aftercare
Proper aftercare is essential to how your tattoo heals and how it looks long term, especially with fine line work. Healing is part of the tattooing process, and how you care for your tattoo during this time plays a major role in the final result.
This aftercare guide is designed for fine line tattoos created at DeLuna Ink in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
Immediately After Your Appointment
Following your tattoo, your artist will apply a protective covering to the tattooed area. This acts as a barrier during the first stage of healing.
Keep the area clean and protected as instructed.
Avoid touching the tattoo with unwashed hands.
Wear clean, loose-fitting clothing to prevent friction and irritation.
Some redness, warmth, or light swelling is normal during the first 24–48 hours.
Cleaning Your Tattoo
Once instructed to do so, gently clean your tattoo using clean hands, lukewarm water, and a mild, fragrance-free soap.
Wash gently… do not scrub.
Pat dry with a clean towel.
Do not use wash cloths, loofahs, or sponges.
Cleaning helps remove excess plasma and keeps the area free of bacteria during healing.
Moisturizing & Ongoing Care
Apply a thin layer of light, unscented moisturizer like Lubriderm, Cerave, or Cetaphil.
Use a light hand… more is not better.
Over-moisturizing can interfere with healing and ink retention.
Reapply only when the skin feels dry or tight.
Your tattoo may begin to peel or flake as it heals. This is normal. Do not pick, scratch, or exfoliate the area.
What to Avoid While Healing
To protect your tattoo and support proper healing, avoid the following:
Submerging the tattoo in water (baths, pools, hot tubs, ocean) for at least 2 weeks
Direct sun exposure while healing
Excessive sweating, intense exercise, or friction on the tattooed area during early healing
Tight clothing that rubs against the tattoo
Scratching, picking, or exfoliating the skin
Once healed, always apply sunscreen to help preserve fine line detail and prevent fading.
Tattoo Healing Timeline
Most tattoos appear healed on the surface within 2-3 weeks, but full healing continues beneath the skin for several more weeks. We consider the tattoo fully healed at 4-6 weeks.
Fine line tattoos often soften slightly as they heal. This is a normal and expected part of the process.
Healing varies by person, placement, and aftercare consistency.
Touch-Ups
We offer and recommend touch-ups as part of the fine line tattooing process to help maintain the integrity of your tattoo over time.
Touch-ups are available 4–6 weeks after your appointment, once the tattoo has fully settled. A $25 fee applies to cover materials and setup. Additional work or extended time may be priced separately depending on healing.
Sun protection, proper moisturizing, and thoughtful placement all play a role in how your tattoo ages long term, even after a touch-up.
Our opinion is that fading is better than a blowout (ie. when the tattoo was done too deep and starts getting dark and blurry). Touching up a tattoo is easy and should be expected for some fine line placements and designs. We can always add more ink, but you can’t take the ink away if it’s been done poorly and blown out.
